Mrs Mad's humble opinion
9/10 Very good. I am pleased with this.
What's it about?
Ella is cursed whatever she is told to do she must. She must always be obedient !
What happens?
At her birth a good fairy gave Ella a gift, obedience. She will always obey when she is told to do something. As you can imagine this is not very nice for Ella and she is desperate to break the spell. When her mother dies things get much worse for Ella and even when she begins to fall in love with a lovely prince, her problems only get worse. What can she do to break this awful curse before it's too late and someone tells her to do something dangerous?
Is it easy to read?
Girls in particular will love this book, don't be put off by the Cinderella connections this story is really good.
Anything else?
A funny story based on a tale we all know, but here the characters come alive they are much more rounded and contemporary. There is plenty of detail and growth as well as adventures and dangerous creatures. It's also nice to see a female lead who is intelligent, plucky, humorous and pretty. Give this book a chance and you will enjoy it.
Other books by Gail Carson Levine include The Two Princesses of Bamarre.

The publisher reckons...
Ella is given a blessing at birth by a very stupid fairy: She gets the gift of obedience! but the blessing turns into a horror for Ella who literally has to do what anyone and everyone tells her, from sweeping the floor to giving up a precious necklace! She has to battle with ogres and wicked stepsisters, make friends and loose them, and even deny she loves her Prince Char to save his life and his kingdom. The story overthrows the stereotypes of the original Cinderella when Ella breaks the curse - not the prince - saving not only herself, but Prince Char as well. And Ella rejects his proposal of marriage, at least until she decides herself to propose to him! And the curse is only broken because she's said 'No!' rather than 'Yes!'. 'If you've read Harry Potter, try Ella Enchanted.' Publishers Weekly - High in Publishers Weekly Bestseller list for several months - A Newbery Honor Medal winner, 1998 - Shortlisted with Harry Potter in July for the American Mythopeaic Award (won by Diana Wynne Jones).
And what do you think?

Ella Enchanted is a very good book. Mrs Levine has a talent only equal to one other author, Mrs J. K. Rowling.
