Mrs Mad's humble opinion
10/10 Excellent work. Well done!
What's it about?
The second instalment in the Doomspell trilogy about two children dragged to another world where they discover they have magical powers and destroy a terrifying witch!
What happens?
Rachel and Eric are safely returned to their parents, who have also adopted Morpeth, the man-child from Ithrea. Little do they know that far away Dragwena's mother is learning about the death of her daughter, and planning her revenge. Rachel's magical powers are causing her problems, because she agreed not to use them her spells are waiting until she sleeps and then playing with her, practicing and doing whatever they like with her sleeping body. Morpeth knows that something strange is happening and thinks that she should take control of her magic again and start using it, but then they discover other children using magic! What is happening on Earth, where nobody has ever had magical powers before? Rachel must journey all across the planet to find these special children and discover how they have started to be able to do magic. Little does she know that not only Dragwena's mother but also her sister Calen are already here training an army of children to destroy her and Larpskendya!
Is it easy to read?
A good read for the confident . Do read book one first though.
Anything else?
I couldn't put this book down, it is brilliant. Bringing the action to Earth was a brilliant idea as was the growth of magic in the children. McNish writes with such confidence and surety, that you can easily believe the story is real, it is totally absorbing. The new characters, like Heiki, who is so evil and Yemi who defies belief are amazing. I can't wait for the last book to be published, I think there is going to be one stonking battle, and I will definitely be there!
Other books by Cliff McNish include The Doomspell.
Who says so?
This review by Mrs Mad.
The publisher reckons...
All over the world children are discovering they have magical powers - as Rachel did when she was abducted by the Witch Dragwena in The Doomspell. But the reason is that the evil Witches of the planet Ool are determined to avenge Dragwena's death by manipulating an army of children and fighting the good Wizards. Rachel's own powers, and the ability of her younger brother Eric to unmake magic, are tested to the full in a thrilling story in which she has to confront another child as strong as she is herself. Every bit as exciting and inventive as The Doomspell, Cliff McNish's new book has the same page-turning quality that has made it so popular with young readers.
And what do you think?
Madina, Cupar
This book is just as stimulating as the first. I thought it was brillantly crafted and just as thrilling as the first. I can't wait for the third one!
