Mrs Mad's humble opinion
10/10 Excellent work. Well done!
What's it about?
A storming follow up to Sabriel ! Lirael has no past and seemingly no future either, but within her she may hold the key to the future of The Old Kingdom.
What happens?
Lirael has always lived with the Clayr, but still has not received the gift of the Sight, at her fourteenth birthday. Ashamed of being so different from those around her, she spends her time working in the Great Library. She reads all the books she can find and wanders the deep corridors entering rooms that have seen no living thing for hundreds of years. When her loneliness becomes too much to bear she creates a dog out of Charter Magic, but it seems The Disreputable Dog is much more than just charter Magic she seems to also embody some Free Magic as well. As the years pass Lirael is lead deeper into the dark beneath the library until one day she reaches Lirael's path and so takes the first step towards her destiny. Meanwhile outside the Glacier, Sameth, the son of Sabriel and Touchstone is returning to The Old Kingdom when he and his friends are attacked by a necromancer who is intent on catching the young prince. Sameth escapes but is weakened and deeply troubled by his journey into death and is desperate to tell his parents that he cannot be the Abhorsen-in-waiting, but with so many attacks by the dead happening and the rise of a necromancer who hates the royal family Sameth is never given the chance. When Lirael and Sameth's paths cross they both learn that there are some things that they have no choice but to do and some paths they have to follow!
Is it easy to read?
A long book that requires competence on the part of the reader.
Anything else?
What an absolutely storming follow up to Sabriel. I was spellbound from page one, everything is in perfect sympathy with the first book and Nix's writing is masterful. I think we are seeing the emergence of a writing talent who will be here for many years to come and whose books will be read for a long time after. Every aspect of the story rings true and the plot carries you along only hinting at what is to come. The scene is now set for one amazing story in the final book of the trilogy. I can't wait so get your pen out Garth!
Other books by Garth Nix include Abhorsen, Mister Monday, Sabriel.
