Mrs Mad's humble opinion
9/10 Very good. I am pleased with this.
What's it about?
The story of Joe, a boy who never seems to fit in with the world he lives in.
What happens?
Everyone who knows Joe Maloney thinks he's batty, except his mum, who has always believed he's special and just needs care and understanding. He truants from school to wander the countryside, hearing songs and whispers that others have forgotten how to hear. He also sees things they cannot. One night a tiger walks through his town and he knows it is coming for him, and his life will never be the same again.
Is it easy to read?
The language itself is easily read, but a degree of maturity will give the reader a better understanding of the story.
Anything else?
I think David Almond is one of the best authors I have ever read. His books are beautiful, magical things that are always changing. Each time you read a book of his you find something new. They are mystical and yet set in the world we live in, incorporating all the normality of everyday life with little glimpses of a wonderful world just beyond our reach.
Other books by David Almond include Heaven Eyes, Kit's Wilderness, Skellig, The Fire Eaters.

The publisher reckons...
Joe lives in Helmouth, a forgotten village crumbling on the edge of the suburbs. His once-loving mother has fallen under the influence of her boyfriend, whose presence overshadows Joe's every move. Joe's friend Stanny thinks that Joe should toughen up with a weekend in the wilderness.
