Mrs Mad's humble opinion
10/10 Excellent work. Well done!
What's it about?
One girl must face her destiny to battle with the dead to save her father's life!
What happens?
As a small child Sabriel was taken across the wall of The Old Kingdom and placed in a school in Ancelstierre. Her father is the Abhorsen, a necromancer whose job it is to make the dead stay that way. One day she is visited by a messenger from death, it brings her the tools her father has always carried. She knows that something terrible must have happened to him and travels back across the Wall into The Old Kingdom to find out exactly what has happened. The Old Kingdom is a frightening world full of parasitical spirits, Mordicants and disgusting Shadow Hands. With a spirit being who inhabits the body of a cat, Sabriel travels through The Old Kingdom, to face the most terrible evil she could possibly imagine!
Is it easy to read?
A long novel that requires a good level of concentration for younger readers.
Anything else?
A stunning first novel that will live long in your memory. It creates a world that is so real it could be outside your front door, and yet it is full of magical and fantastic creatures and ideas. I thought this the best book I have read for some time, it is entrancing, locking you in the strange world that is so close to our own the idea of the dead beings coming back and trying to possess living people is truly gripping and the concept of the Abhorsen going into death to really kill the dead or save them is stunning!. Nix is definitely a name to watch out for, in fact the follow up novel 'Lirael' is due out next September.
Other books by Garth Nix include Abhorsen, Lirael, Mister Monday.
