Mrs Mad's humble opinion
9/10 Very good. I am pleased with this.
What's it about?
A version of Shakespeare's play presented by Michael Rosen, for a new generation of readers.
What happens?
The two warring families of Montague and Capulet, are well known throughout Verona, but the love that rows between Romeo and Juliet must remain a secret. Constant arguments and fights bring the deaths of family on both sides and the young lovers look doomed to be kept apart. A tragic misunderstanding leads to the final heartbreaking scene where both Romeo and Juliet take their own lives to be reunited with their lost love.
Is it easy to read?
This is quite easily read because Michael Rosen adds simple explanations to the text of Shakespeare, that tell the reader clearly what is happening.
Anything else?
This is a beautiful version of one of Shakespeare's most widely known plays. It is a brilliant idea to present the play in such a way, because by adding the explanations of what is happening and leaving out some of the real text it becomes so much more accessible. Anyone contemplating reading the actual play or going to see it would do well to read this first. The art work is stunning and adds a poignancy to the text, which again makes the whole package so much more accessible. I love this book, it is beautiful!
Other books by Michael Rosen include Classic Poetry: An Illustrated Collection, Hairy Tales and Nursery Crimes, Little Rabbit Foo Foo, Mind Your Own Business, Quick, Let's Get Out of Here, Rover, Snore!, We're Going on a Bear Hunt.
Who says so?
This review by Mrs Mad.
The publisher reckons...
This most famous of love stories is uniquely presented in picture book form for children. The tale is told scene by scene in a simple lively style, with dialogue reproducing Shakespeare's own words so that the most celebrated passages of the play are retained in their original form.
