Mrs Mad's humble opinion
10/10 Excellent work. Well done!
What's it about?
A tale of witches, wizards and mixed identities. The heroine, Sophie Hatter becomes the victim of an ageing spell and believes the only person who can help her is the wicked wizard Howl. He lives in a floating castle and it is whispered he eats the souls of young girls. So even if he lifts the spell, Sophie will still be in great danger.
What happens?
Sophie is a spirited heroine who decides to find her own solutions to her problems. She enters the mysterious castle and meets its strange occupants: the self obsessed wizard, his young apprentice and the wicked fire demon Calcifer.
Is it easy to read?
Girls and boys will love this story. It needs someone willing to read a long text and with good reading skills. Went down very well as a book to read to the whole class.
Anything else?
A wonderful read, full of amazing adventures and mistaken identities. Wynne Jones writes clear descriptions of all her characters and it is easy to become caught up in their adventures.

The publisher reckons...
In the land of Ingary, where seven league boots and cloaks of invisibility do exist, Sophie Hatter catches the unwelcome attention of the Witch of the Waste and is put under a spell.

I think Diana Wynne Jones is the one of the finest writers in her medium. JK Rowling (among many others) owe her a great deal.

I really like the book and it is also very unpredictable. It was the best book I've ever read and I really like to own it, I've read it about 5 times already. I love this book
