Mrs Mad's humble opinion
8/10 You are working hard. Well done.
What's it about?
A brother and sister's search for the truth about who and what they are.
What happens?
Ned and Nell have a strange past, they seem to have strong links with the sea. Ned often dreams of it and Nell can hear the ocean's footsteps. They have heard some stories of a girl called Ultramarine, but nobody will tell them the whole story. Then Arion appears from the sea, perhaps he can tell them the answers to their questions, but is he real or a ghost? Why does he disappear and who is leaving the damp footprints that never fade?
Is it easy to read?
This takes a reader with confidence and independence. It is quite a long read but well worth the effort. Suitable for girls in particular but boys should enjoy it too.
Anything else?
Jenny Nimmo has a poetic quality about her writing. This haunting tale is so well written it was a pleasure to read. The tangled web of the children's history is gradually unravelled as the story unfolds. The emotions of her characters always seems to be very important to Nimmo and it is very easy to identify with her characters.
Other books by Jenny Nimmo include Dog Star, Emlyn's Moon, Griffin's Castle, Midnight for Charlie Bone, Seth and the Strangers, The Chestnut Soldier, The Rinaldi Ring, The Snow Spider, The Time Twister, Tom and the Pterosaur.
Who says so?
This review by Mrs Mad.
The publisher reckons...
A novel with a "green" theme by the author of "The Snow Spider", winner of two awards and dramatized by Harlech TV. Ned and Nell cannot understand their dreams of the sea, and when three strangers come to the house their terrifying past comes closer. Only Arion, the man from the sea, can help them.
And what do you think?
Books for your Children.
"A rich and magical book with strong emotional resonance."
Junior Bookshelf
"...most talented writer... Miss Nimmo uses prose like a poet..."
