|A boy who is desperate to stop his mother having any more babies. What with his two younger siblings, school work and the school play he just doesn't have the time for any more nappy changes! |
|Angus dreams of being a brave pirate, called Bumface, but in reality he is a twelve year old school boy who also looks after his younger brother and sister. His life is one long round of childcare and school work. His mother is a busy actress and his father and two step fathers are models and actors. Angus knows he cannot cope anymore, he has no support from any of the parents in his life and is afraid to tell anyone else because of the consequences. Suddenly there is anew man in his mother's life and she starts talking about babies. Angus has got to make sure she doesn't get pregnant again!
In his desperate search through family planning clinics and birth control fairs Angus meets a girl called Rindi who seems to be on a similar mission. Angus realises that he is not the only kid with this kind of problem. |
|Easily read, I think it is only the subject matter here which may preclude some readers. Do check this through with an adult, or if you are a teacher read yourself first. Any older reader with some knowledge of sex education should find this a good laugh. |
|A very funny and touching look at life, for a twelve year old who seems to be the adult in his family. The problems here are real, but Gleitzman studies them with just the right amount of fun to enable young people to broach these problems without finding the book heavy going.
The characters, particularly Angus, Leo and Imogen are so carefully observed they are like three old friends who are constantly finishing each other's sentences. |
|Other books by Morris Gleitzman include Toad Rage, Two Weeks with the Queen. |

This is a fantastic text to cover with Year 7. My two classes are thoroughly enjoying this. It touches on some very important issues and creates much discussion. A must for any English teacher of this age !
