Mrs Mad's humble opinion
9/10 Very good. I am pleased with this.
What's it about?
A world called Middle Earth and the weird and wonderful creatures that live there.
What happens?
Bilbo Baggins is just a quiet ordinary Hobbit, until a wizard and several dwarfs cart him off on an adventure that will not only change his life for ever but also have grave effects upon the whole of their world.
Is it easy to read?
This book does need to be read by someone who is a capable reader, and one who has someone else they can check some of the manes out with. It is a long book for a child to read and so needs encouragement and time. A very good book to read to either a child or a class of children, always goes down well.
Anything else?
One of the best books ever written, a complete world in itself. Full of everything an adventure should have and then plenty of other things I've never even thought of. A classic of our time, one of those books to which others are compared and most don't come close to. This is the only way to prepare a reader to move on to 'The Lord of the Rings', surely the greatest fantasy novel ever written.
Other books by J.R.R. Tolkien include The Lord of the Rings.
Who says so?

The publisher reckons...
J.R.R. Tolkien's classic work, "The Hobbit" celebrates its 60th year of publication with this illustrated edition by artist Alan Lee, winner of the Carnegie Medal for illustration. Illustrations depict key scenes such as Gollum and Bilbo, The Wargs and The Lord of the Eagles. Bilbo Baggins has taken his place among the immortals of English fiction, enjoyed by children and adults alike. Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit met with instant success when published in 1937. It is a complete and marvellous tale in itself, but it also forms a prelude to The Lord of the Rings.
And what do you think?
