Eric Chant had always known that his sister Gwendolin was a witch. After they were orphaned she arranged for them to live with a fellow witch. Gwendolin continued her lessons in witchcraft and Eric learned to play the violin, until Gwendolin got so annoyed with the awful sound it made that she turned it into a cat. From then on things get very confusing as the strange and powerful Chrestomanci begins to annoy Gwendolin, especially when he takes her magic away.
This is quite a difficult read and a child would need to be a very confident reader and have a good imagination to fully understand this book.
A wonderful story, full of magic and adventure. This type of story comes so naturally to Wynne Jones and she keeps the story moving at a quick pace. There are so many twists and turns in the story that it is difficult to put this book down. You might find the beginning a bit of a struggle but it really pays to keep going as the rest of the story is really worth it. You become involved in the thoughts of the characters, and the descriptions of people and places make it easy to become even more entrapped in the story. You wonder how things could get any worse for Eric and his sister and then off she goes and does something even more shocking.

Everybody says that Gwendolyn Chant is a gifted witch with astonishing powers, so it suits her enormously when she is taken to live in Chrestomanci Castle. Her brother Eric (better known as Cat) is not so keen, for he has no talent for magic at all. However, life with the great enchanter is not what either of them expects and sparks begin to fly! Winner of the Guardian Award.

This is an outstanding book full of magic and mystery probably aimed for ages 8+ . It is, in my opinion, better than Harry Potter! The main character is ‘Cat’, a small, shy boy who thinks he has no talent at all. He is over shadowed by his eld
