Mrs Mad's humble opinion
7/10 This is quite a good piece of work.
What's it about?
An outcast in his school who stumbles onto an evil that is bent on destruction.
What happens?
Jackus did not want to have anything to do with the school play, but he made a bargain with the headmaster. No police if Jackus was in the play. What choice did he have? Jackus gets off to a bad start with the other children in the play and makes no real attempt to become friends. However as the rehearsals for Sweeny Todd progress, Jackus begins to realise that other forces are at work in the theatre. Ghosts of misery and fear are back and out to exact a terrible revenge upon those performing the play.
Is it easy to read?
Some children find this story not scary enough soon enough, however it is well worth continuing. A reader would need to have some idea of who Sweeny Todd was. He was called the Demon Barber of Fleet Street because he killed his clients and chopped them up to make pies.
Anything else?
An extremely well written ghost story. Gillian Cross gives the reader a clear insight into the feelings of loneliness and fear felt by those on the fringe of social groups. She adds the strange supernatural aspect and builds the suspense with cleverly structured plot development.
Other books by Gillian Cross include The Demon Headmaster, The Demon Headmaster Strikes Again, The Demon Headmaster Takes Over, The Prime Minister's Brain, The Revenge of the Demon Headmaster, Tightrope, Wolf.
Who says so?
This review by Mrs Mad.
The publisher reckons...
It started as a school play - but it became something far more sinister and deadly. What was the origin of the evil beginning to haunt the actors? Gillian Cross has won the Carnegie Medal, the Smarties Prize and the Whitbread Children's Novel Award.
