Mrs Mad's humble opinion
8/10 You are working hard. Well done.
What's it about?
Tells the history of Chrestomanci the enchanter from "Charmed Life". How the young Christopher find out about his strange powers and learns to use them.
What happens?
Christopher Chant thought everyone could get into other worlds the way he did, but it was only when his uncle found out and sent him on mysterious missions that Christopher realised he also had very special magical powers. He had nine lives and was therefore destined to become the next Chrestomanci, the greatest magician in the country. Christopher was sent to study at Chrestomanci Castle, but evil forces were trying to get to him and he began to lose his lives at an alarming rate.
Is it easy to read?
A very popular book in my classroom - children enjoy reading it after Charmed Life. Boys find it particularly interesting as it is full of adventures and mysteries. Girls also enjoy it for similar reasons, but also because it continues the Chrestomanci tale.
Anything else?
This book tells the story of the youth of Chrestomanci the character from Charmed Life. It explains much about the enchanter and his strange powers and is a wonderful read as a book on it's own. Pacy and well written it is action packed, full of adventure and as always extremely detailed.
Other books by Diana Wynne Jones include A Sudden Wild Magic, A Tale of Time City, Archer's Goon, Black Maria, Cart and Cwidder, Castle in the Air, Charmed Life, Deep Secret, Dogsbody, Drowned Ammet, Eight Days of Luke, Fantasy Stories, Fire and Hemlock, Hexwood, Hidden Turnings, Howl's Moving Castle, Minor Arcana, Mixed Magics, Power of Three, The Crown of Dalemark, The Dark Lord of Derkholm, The Homeward Bounders, The Magicians of Caprona, The Merlin Conspiracy, The Ogre Downstairs, The Spellcoats, The Time of the Ghost, The Tough Guide to Fantasy Land, The Year of the Griffin, Wild Robert, Wilkin's Tooth, Witch Week.

The publisher reckons...
Discovering that he has nine lives and is destined to be the next 'Chrestomanci' is not part of Christopher's plans for the future: he'd much rather play cricket and wander around his secret dream worlds. But he soon finds that destiny is difficult to avoid, and that having more than the usual number of lives is pretty inconvenient - especially when you lose them as easily as he does! Then an evil smuggler, known only as The Wraith, threatens the ways of the worlds and forces Christopher to take action…

Diana Wynne Jones is a very witty author, and has written some very fascinating novels such as Charmed Life and Howl's Moving Castle. The Lives of Christopher Chant is about a boy called Christopher who goes to different worlds in his sleep, and then he g

Think of a world, almost like our own but a little more genteel and old-fashioned, where magic and witchcraft is as common as mathematics--but just as dangerous in the wrong hands. In The Lives of Christopher Chant--the fourth book in her Worlds of Chrest
